Dubai Police has initiated a community sports program titled “Down Syndrome Rehabilitation through Para Taekwondo”, aiming to empower individuals with Down syndrome by facilitating their participation in local, regional, and international sports competitions. The project reflects Dubai’s broader commitment to inclusive development outlined in the UAE National Policy for Empowering People of Determination.

The initiative is a collaboration between the General Department of Training, the People of Determination Empowerment Council, the UAE Taekwondo Federation, and the Emirates Down Syndrome Association. It focuses on enhancing physical and mental abilities, boosting self-confidence, and enabling engagement in various sports and community events.

Brigadier Ahmed Mardas, Director of the General Department of Training, emphasized the importance of developing human resources across all sectors, including physical and sports activities for people of determination. He stated, “This sports initiative underscores our dedication to providing a comprehensive sports and rehabilitation environment.”

Dr. Manal Jaroor, Chairperson of the Emirates Down Syndrome Association, expressed gratitude to Dubai Police and the People of Determination Empowerment Council, noting the significant value para taekwondo training adds to the sports practiced by individuals with Down syndrome.

Major Abdullah Al Shamsi, Chairperson of the People of Determination Empowerment Council at Dubai Police, highlighted the initiative’s alignment with the Year of Community and its role in strengthening Dubai Police’s community involvement. He stated, “We believe that training and rehabilitation are fundamental rights for everyone.”

The program includes various training phases and levels, with plans to introduce female participants with Down syndrome in the upcoming academic year. Expert Abdul Quddus Mohammed, a certified trainer and Director of the Games for People of Determination team, noted the initiative’s role in improving motor and neurological coordination, boosting self-confidence, and fostering social integration.
