Dubai Announces 4-Day Work Week and Reduced Hours for Government Employees

Dubai has announced a major shift in the government sector: a 4-day work week and shorter daily hours.

The new policy will apply to select government departments starting next month. Officials say the change is designed to improve employee well-being, reduce burnout, and increase overall productivity.

Under the new model, employees will work Monday through Thursday, with Fridays off. Working hours will also be reduced to 32 hours per week instead of the standard 40.

According to the Dubai Media Office, this change aligns with Dubai’s vision of becoming a global leader in progressive work culture. Leaders believe fewer working days can lead to better focus, innovation, and more efficient services.

“Shorter weeks don’t mean less work. They mean smarter work,” said one senior official involved in the policy rollout. Trials from other emirates and global cities have shown that reduced hours often lead to higher performance and lower stress.

Employees covered under the new policy will also be given the option to work remotely on certain days. Flexibility and well-being are central themes of the plan.

The move echoes similar experiments worldwide, from Iceland to the UAE’s own emirate of Sharjah, which implemented a 4-day week in 2022 with strong success.

Dubai officials confirmed that the impact will be closely monitored. Adjustments may follow based on employee feedback, service quality, and departmental performance.

Residents are encouraged to check with individual departments for updated hours and service availability during the new schedule rollout.
