Starting July 1, 2025, UAE nationals holding ordinary passports will be able to stay in Japan for up to 90 days without a visa, an extension from the previous 30-day limit. This significant update, announced by the UAE Embassy in Tokyo, reflects deepening ties between the UAE and Japan and is expected to boost tourism, business, and cultural exchanges.
The extension of the visa-free period is a milestone in the 50-year diplomatic relationship between the UAE and Japan, celebrated in 2022. The UAE Embassy in Tokyo highlighted that this change will facilitate increased tourism and business activities, fostering stronger economic and cultural ties. Japan welcomed over 2.4 million international visitors in November 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, and this policy is expected to attract more Emirati travelers to explore destinations like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hokkaido.
His Excellency Shahab Ahmed Al Faheem, UAE Ambassador to Japan, emphasized the significance of this decision, stating it will enhance convenience for Emiratis visiting Japan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan noted that the measure aims to increase the number of UAE tourists and improve business travel efficiency. (Gulf News)
UAE nationals planning to travel to Japan under the visa waiver should ensure their passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry. While no visa is required for stays up to 90 days, travelers must comply with Japan’s entry requirements, such as providing proof of onward travel and sufficient funds for their stay. For those planning longer stays or activities like work or study, a visa application must be submitted through the VFS Global Japan Visa Application Centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, depending on the emirate of residence.
Since August 1, 2024, visa applications for non-exempt nationalities or longer stays are processed through VFS Global, with processing times ranging from 8-10 working days to up to four weeks. UAE residents (non-nationals) can also apply for a Japan eVisa for tourism, valid for a single-entry stay of up to 90 days, through the JAPAN eVISA platform.
For Dubai’s travel-savvy community, this policy opens up new opportunities to explore Japan’s vibrant culture, from the cherry blossoms of Kyoto to the bustling streets of Tokyo. The extended visa-free period aligns with Dubai’s vision of fostering global connectivity, as outlined in the Dubai Plan 2021, and supports the UAE’s growing reputation as a global hub. Local travel agencies in Dubai, such as Emirates, report increased interest in Japan routes, with direct flights from Dubai to Tokyo, Osaka, and other cities making travel more accessible.
Social media posts from accounts like @UAEEmbTokyo and @JapanEmbUAE have generated excitement among Emiratis, with many sharing plans to visit Japan for its cultural festivals, ski resorts, and culinary experiences. This enthusiasm underscores the policy’s potential to drive tourism and strengthen bilateral ties.
The extended visa waiver is part of ongoing efforts to enhance UAE-Japan relations, with both nations exploring further cooperation in trade, technology, and tourism. As Japan prepares to host Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, the visa relaxation is expected to encourage more Emiratis to attend, further solidifying cultural and economic exchanges. Travelers are advised to check the Embassy of Japan in the UAE website for updates on entry requirements and travel advisories.
