Iran Says US Rescue Mission Foiled as Trump Claims Airman Was Saved

Iran US rescue mission claims have sharply diverged after Tehran said a US operation failed, while Washington declared it a success.

Iran’s military said on Sunday that a US attempt to rescue an airman from a downed fighter jet was “completely foiled.” The claim directly contradicts statements from US President Donald Trump, who said the officer had been rescued and was “safe and sound.”

The incident took place near Isfahan, a central Iranian city, during heightened tensions linked to the ongoing regional conflict. According to Iran, the mission ended in failure with significant losses for US forces.

Iran Claims Operation Destroyed Aircraft

Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Iran’s central military command Khatam Al-Anbiya, described the operation as a failed attempt carried out under false pretenses.

He said the US had planned the mission at an abandoned airport in southern Isfahan, presenting it as a recovery effort for a downed pilot. However, Iranian forces allegedly intercepted the operation before it could succeed.

In a televised statement reported by Reuters, Zolfaghari claimed that two C-130 transport aircraft and two Black Hawk helicopters were destroyed during the mission.

Iranian state media released images showing charred wreckage scattered across a desert area, with smoke still rising from the site. These visuals were presented as evidence of the failed operation.

Trump Declares Mission a Success

In contrast, US President Donald Trump stated that the rescue operation had successfully recovered the stranded airman. He described the officer as “safe and sound,” offering no details about the mission’s execution.

The conflicting narratives highlight the growing information battle between the two sides. Iran dismissed Trump’s statement, calling it “empty rhetoric” that does not reflect the situation on the ground.

Zolfaghari said the outcome of the incident proves the “superior position of Iran’s powerful armed forces,” reinforcing Tehran’s stance in the ongoing conflict.

Casualties and Local Response Reported

Iranian media reported that strikes linked to the rescue operation killed at least five people in the southwest region. Authorities have not released detailed information about the victims.

Footage aired by state television showed local residents searching for the missing airman. Some individuals were seen carrying flags and rifles as they combed desert areas.

According to reports, authorities offered a bounty for information about the pilot, further intensifying local involvement in the search effort.

Rising Tensions and Information War

The incident reflects rising tensions in the region, where military actions are now paired with competing narratives. Both sides are using public statements to shape global perception.

While Iran emphasizes military strength and control, the United States focuses on operational success and personnel safety. Independent verification of either claim remains limited.

As the conflict evolves, such incidents are likely to increase, adding uncertainty and risk across the region.
