Burj Khalifa Metro Station to Expand Capacity by 65% in RTA-Emaar Upgrade

The Burj Khalifa-Dubai Mall Metro Station is set to undergo a massive expansion to handle growing commuter demand. Once complete, the revamped station will accommodate up to 220,000 passengers daily, a 65% increase in capacity.

This ambitious upgrade is being led by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in collaboration with Emaar Properties. The expansion aims to support increasing footfall, especially during busy periods like New Year’s Eve, public holidays, and national celebrations, when the station sees a major surge in traffic.

The current station, which spans 6,700 square metres, will expand to 8,500 square metres. As a result, its hourly capacity will jump from 7,250 passengers to an impressive 12,320 passengers.

According to the RTA’s official news portal, the expansion is essential to keep up with the steady increase in metro ridership. The Dubai Metro system plays a key role in reducing road congestion and promoting sustainable urban mobility.

An RTA spokesperson emphasized the project’s long-term vision:

“This upgrade ensures that Dubai’s transport system remains world-class and future-ready, especially around key tourism and event hubs.”

Emaar, the real estate giant behind the Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa, is also backing the expansion to support smoother tourist access and enhance the overall visitor experience.

The station’s location connects directly to some of the city’s most visited landmarks. With millions visiting annually, the need for larger capacity and quicker crowd movement is critical.

Once completed, this expansion is expected to ease congestion, improve safety, and enhance the comfort of metro users during high-traffic times.
